Lafayette Plaque Location: This marker is located on Highway 66 in Cannelton, Indiana. It is in front of the Perry County Courthouse Museum and can be seen between the telephone poles in this 2005 photo. Perry County Olde Courthouse Museum. Close-up of the stone. The plaque reads Gilbert Mortier Marquis De Lafayette who spent a night and a day at Rock Island four miles from here May 9, 1925. His steamboat was wrecked. Pioneers for miles came to see him. The spot is now called Lafayette Spring. 1775 - 1783 In memory of the Revolutionary soldiers buried in Perry County. Terence Connor, Thos. Cummings, George Ewing, Lemuel Mallory, Abram Hiley, Thomas Rhodes, John Lamb, Jacob Weatherholt. Erected by Lafayette Spring Chapter D.A.R. - 1934. |
